Yesterday morning Amaya had her second follow up with the wound care doctor. Lidie had a tough time with it. She really didn't want to "get baby sat-ed anymore!" She's been hanging out with family and friends so she can have a break from the doctor offices and waiting, but then she gets sad and anxious. Its hard having to leave her, but I know that the wound care department at the hospital is not a very kid friendly place. She was quickly distracted by her grammy and Paco. Today she's enjoying a day at home with me and is loving it!
Amaya and I were the first ones scheduled for the day and got seen quickly. This was such a nice treat, since the last two times we had to wait nearly two hours to be seen. When the doctor came over to examine Amaya's heel he noticed right away that the sensitivity in the are has lessened. He was happy to see that. He asked how our appointment went with the plastic surgeon so I filled him in. He agreed with the recommendation to hold off on surgery. He said that at least now we know what our options are down the road if we need them. He asked how the boot was working out and I told him that we just got in on Monday (finally!), but that it was fine. He had a nurse photograph the area and measure it again. He noticed that the area was still dry and asked that we put moisturizer on it nightly. He said that the new skin that has come in isn't the same as her old skin and might not have all the glands in it necessary to create enough moisture or sweat. He said that might switch later in life, but for now we have to do what the skin isn't able to do on its own. I told him that Dr. Nelson suggested that we get gel inserts for Amaya's shoes and that we've done that. He said that was a great idea. Not only because it cushions her heel but that if we get one with arch support it will help take the pressure off of her heel. He said that even if it only helps by 5%, its worth it. He said that if each thing we're doing helps by a few percentage points then add it all up and it will continue to up our chances at healing the heel.
He said he was happy with how the heel was looking. Which made me very happy! He said that the area with atrophy is getting smaller. He was happy with how well we've been taking care of it and asked that we continue with our efforts. He said that he wants to see Amaya in three months. Until then he wants us to continue to have Amaya wear the boot at home, wear the inserts during the day, get gel inserts with arch support, put lotion on at night, have her sleep with the pink foam on her heel, and continue to wear the foam gauze during the day. He said we'll continue to do it all to help the heel continue to heal.
I'll upload pictures of her heel and boot later on. Thanks again for your continued help, support and concern for Amaya.
