Well it's about three and I'm anxiously awaiting our next text from the nurse updating us on Amaya. She's been in surgery for a little over an hour now. She got wheeled away at 1:30 (the hardest part of the day for me). And we got a text saying that surgery started at 2:04 and that "Amaya is doing great."
I arrived at the hospital at 11:50 and Josh and Amaya showed up at 12:10. They we making some last minute trips to keep Amaya distracted from hunger (she kept asking for food all morning). By the time we made it upstairs we had a message from the hospital saying that Dr.Nelson was running ahead of schedule today and they where wondering where Amaya was. We got called back a few minutes later then everything went by so fast. The nurse came in(she was great!) gave Amaya and us our hospital bracelets, gave her a gown and took her vitals. Next came in Dr. Neslon, the anesthesiologist and the nurse who'll be in the room helping. They all said she was so cute and very mature for her age. She was cooperative, and calm. Dr. Nelson said he reviewed her chart and x-rays again and decided to do more work on her hip than planned. He said that her hip is right on the brink of what's considered okay. But with the lenghthening it might too much strain on the hip and cause the ball to come out of the socket. So he's going to cut the hip bone and bend it so that it hugs the ball better. This will mean that she won't be able to stand on it for about four to six weeks. She'll rely on her wheelchair and a walker. He recommended that she have an epidural put in so that her pain will be under control, especially since she'll be starting therapy tomorrow(that's right, tomorrow!). He said that patients tend to feel nervous and scared about moving it so the epidural will help ease her nerves (knowing she can move it without much pain). We decided to go ahead and do that. He also said that the muscle he planned to release on the back of her hip he won't do just yet (she's very flexible). He said that might need to be done later as the lenghtening process continues. He reminded us that physical therapy will need to start the very next day after she is sent home. He said that with other surgeries it's not a big deal if you miss a couple of days, but not with this type. It's crucial that she not miss any days. She'll need to have hour long sessions at the office and two half hour long sessions at home. She'll also need to wear a bar at night to keep the knee straight. He said the two main things to work on are bending the knee and being able to straighten it. "When you're not working on one, work on the other." I was thankful for the time Dr.Nelson took to explain everything to us and answer our questions. He left me leaving calm, reassured and knowing that Amaya was in good hands.
I'll update later tonight to let you know how she's doing. I just needed to post this now before I forgot some of the datails (plus three hours is an awfully long time!).
Thanks again for all your kind words, love and support.
We just got our next update "surgery proceeding as expected."
